Shimano is focusing on shifting and braking performance, Shimano SLX M7100 maintains hallmark value and durability and appeals to a broader range of riders. Additionally, Shimano refined chain line specifications for SLX M7100 including a 55mm chain line, ensuring that the drivetrain is optimized for a greater variety of frame designs.

The New Shimano SLX M7100 drivetrain is a 12-speed and comes in groupsets of both 1x12 and 2x12 drivetrain setups, along with 2-piston Race or 4-piston Enduro hydraulic disc brake options. Some new things to note, the two-piston and four-piston hydraulic disc brakes, which share a brand new lever design that draws on the same angled profile as the current Shimano XTR model. The two piston caliper carries over from the Shimano M8000 brake, but the 4-piston caliper is all new. And yes there is a new double crankset. The direct-mount system means the crank can swap between 1x and 2x setups easily.

The Shimano SLX M7100 has a new hub too, with the rear hub being based around the Micro Spline freehub standard. The smaller freehub body is necessary to accommodate the new 12-speed cassettes, which is available in both 10-45t and 10-51t ratios. Shimano has moved from the 13-spline HG interface to the 23-spline Micro Spline system which does a better job of distributing loads, allowing Shimano to lighten its hubs with alloy freehub bodies. Micro Spline, along with Shimano’s new SCYLENCE drive system, is designed to be adaptable to new axle standards.

Shimano has taken a utilitarian approach to both functionality and aesthetics making changes in materials and construction for a groupset that weighs a mere 148g heavier than an equivalent XT groupset.
